With 119 House members seated, including the recent addition of Mike Redondo through a successful special election, our legislative landscape is shaping up for a robust and dynamic 2024 session. Redondo has seamlessly integrated into the House, participating in recent committee meetings and adding valuable perspectives to the ongoing discussions.
The final puzzle piece awaits resolution as Erika Booth faces Tom Keen on January 16 in the last special election. The outcome will finalize the composition of the House for the 2024 Legislative Session.
Governor DeSantis’s Focus on Florida’s Future Recommended Budget
Governor DeSantis has charted a course for the state’s fiscal future with a recommended budget of $114 billion, demonstrating a thoughtful balance between financial responsibility and strategic investments. While this represents a slight decrease from the current year’s budget, it underscores a commitment to efficiency without compromising essential services.
Key highlights of the proposed budget include a targeted focus on the property insurance market, significant allocations for K-12 education, and a forward-looking approach to tax relief that could bring a considerable financial boost to our industry.
Tax Breaks and Incentives: A Gift for the New Year
Should the Legislature endorse the Governor’s recommendations, we will celebrate Christmas in July once again with a package of tax breaks totaling $1.1 billion, including:
- $409 million for a one-year exemption on residential property insurance taxes, fees, and assessments.
- $22 million permanent premium tax exemption for flood policies.
- $475 million in sales tax holidays.
- $165 million increase in retailer sales tax collection allowance.
- $5 million corporate income tax credit for employing individuals with unique abilities.
Sales tax holidays enjoyed this past summer by our businesses and customers alike are being recommended again, including the three-month Freedom Summer sales tax holiday, saving Florida families more than $241 million on outdoor recreation items, including camping items, and the 7-day Tool Time sales tax holiday, saving skilled workers more than $16 million on tools they need for work.
Infrastructure and Economic Growth: Paving the Way Forward
Our state and the RV industry’s future relies on robust infrastructure and sustainable economic growth. The budget outlines significant investments in Florida’s transportation network, with $14.5 billion allocated for the state transportation work program. The Moving Florida Forward Initiative’s second phase, backed by $630 million, promises relief from traffic congestion through 20 expedited projects.
Job Creation and Small Business Support: Fueling Florida’s Prosperity
Recognizing the vital role outdoor recreation plays in job creation and business development, Governor DeSantis has proposed strategic investments that will impact us, including:
- $100 million for the Job Growth Grant Fund, supporting local infrastructure and workforce training projects.
- $105 million to continue marketing efforts through VISIT FLORIDA.
- $175.2 million for the State Small Business Credit Initiative, providing small businesses with essential access to capital.
